Albi

Bricks, Bridges & a Touch of Medieval Magic

Nicknamed “Albi la Rouge” for the distinctive red bricks used in its architecture, Albi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best day trips from Toulouse.

The city’s old town is a treasure trove of medieval charm, with must-see spots including Place Savène, Le Castelviel, the Maison du Vieil Albi—a classic example of medieval domestic architecture—and Place du Château, marked by the striking XXL “ALBI” letters.

Towering over the town is the fortified Sainte-Cécile Cathedral—the largest brick cathedral in the world and the most extensively painted cathedral in Europe. A short walk away, the Pont Vieux (Old Bridge) spans the Tarn River and remains one of the few medieval bridges in France still in use today.

Don’t miss a peaceful stroll through the beautifully manicured gardens of the Palais de la Berbie, or a visit to the lively covered market to sample regional delicacies and soak up the local atmosphere.
