Pyrenees Mountains

Peaks, Villages & a Breath of Mountain Air

Stretching along the French–Spanish border, the Pyrenees are some of the most stunning mountains you’ll ever see — full of dramatic peaks, green valleys, and picture-perfect little villages. It’s a place where you can go hiking to waterfalls one day, soak in a thermal spa the next, and then settle into a cozy restaurant for hearty mountain food and local wine.

Some favorite things to do:

  • Cirque de Gavarnie — A natural amphitheater of sheer cliffs and waterfalls, often called the “natural cathedral of the Pyrenees.” At its center is the Gavarnie Falls, one of Europe’s tallest waterfalls. The 5–6 km round-trip hike from the village takes 1–2 hours, or you can make the journey on horseback. Perfect for a picnic or just soaking up the views.

  • Petit Train d’Artouste — A high-altitude tourist train winding through glacial lakes, waterfalls, and rugged peaks. The ride lasts about an hour one way, accessed via a short gondola from Artouste-Fabrèges — a perfect way to enjoy the mountains without hiking.

  • Spa Towns — Bagnères-de-Luchon and Ax-les-Thermes have natural hot springs dating back to Roman times. Many are right in town, ideal for a relaxing soak after a morning of exploring.

  • Charming Villages — In Saint-Lary and Foix, wander cobblestone streets, visit medieval castles, and enjoy markets and cafes.

  • Outdoor Adventures — Cycle famous Tour de France routes, paraglide over the valleys, kayak on clear rivers, or take a scenic drive through iconic mountain passes like Col du Tourmalet and Col d’Aubisque to soak in the views.

  • A Taste of Spain — Just a short drive away, Spain offers tapas, lively plazas, and a fresh perspective on the mountains.
