Carcassone
Fortress, Flair & a Touch of French History
Considered by many as one of the must see destinations for history lovers, Carcassone looks like it was plucked straight from the pages of a medieval fairytale. It is one of the top UNESCO World Heritage Sites in France and is famous for its massive double walls, 52 stone towers, and labyrinthine cobbled streets - all impeccably preserved.
Explore the medieval Fortress and wander through the majestic Château Comtal inside. Walk atop the ramparts for sweeping views of the Aude River valley and enjoy the walls light up at night, turning the city into a glowing fortress under the stars.
Visit the Basilique Saint Nazaire - a stunning mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and admire the stained-glass windows that date back to the 13th century.
The Cité de Carcassonne is lined with many local artisan boutiques and cafés; don’t miss the local specialty Cassoulet - a hearty dish of white beans, duck confit, and sausage.
Not far from Carcassone you will find the Canal du Midi - a 240km waterway that connects the Atlantic and the Mediterranean seas. Cycle along the river or take a cruise - self drive or via guided tour, and be sure to refuel at a local vineyard as the canal conveniently runs through one of France’s largest wine region - Languedoc.
For a more adventurous experience, head 80kms south of Carcassone to Gorges de Galamus for a combination of geological beauty, cultural heritage, and quiet moments off the beaten path - the perfect spot for a hike or canyoning. Don’t forget to visit the chapel Ermitage Saint-Antoine inside the cave.
